That $225 is rather high. I pay about that in winter for a month for all electricity for a 3 bedroom house that is on a heat pump, south of Dayton.

However, you don't say what kind of heat your apartment has. If you do not have a heat pump (which looks like a central air conditioner that runs in the winter) then the only other form of electric heat is "resistance" heat. Usually electric resistance heat is found in electric baseboards. This means that the electric is used to heat heating elements, just like stove burners. This, by far, is the most expensive form of heat source.

Since you indicated that your heat source is very old, it is probably resistance heat.

If you are on gas heat, your bill is WAY too high to make sense.

Except that the commenter above who recommended that you reduce your heating is correct, too. You will use a great deal more energy for every 10 degrees higher you run your heat.

We (Me, my wife and 2 year old kid) have moved to Dayton (Riverside area) recently. We are here on a year assignment related to my work. We come from Asian country where it is hot during the whole year. We have taken 1BR on 1 year lease in Amhurst appts. While the rent per month is below than the expected, the first electricity (DP&L company) bill is way high than expected...it's $225 a month for a month of Feb. My wife and 2 year old kid stay at home the whole day while I go to work. Our heater is centralized...the unit is in living room and one vent opens up in our bedroom..... Is this what one usually gets during this time of the year? I was in Pennsylvania 3 year back. Back then, we used to get $100 per month....

Thanks for looking....
You mentioned it was your first bill, was there a deposit or some sort of hook up fee?? When I bought my house I had to pay a $175 deposit fee for the electric. I live in Kentucky, not sure if it's the same in Dayton.
