In 2005, we were considering relocating to Dover for a new job opportunity. While there, we were really impressed with the Old Dover neighborhood (near Wesley College) with all of the Victorian houses and quaint old town feel. At that time, there were only about 4 houses for sale in that neighborhood and one actually had a contract on it. A realtor we spoke to said not many house become available in this neighborhood. Unfortunately, the job opportunity did not pan out as expected.
Now the same job opportunity has presented itself once again. When looking at the same Old Dover neighborhood this past week there were no less than 20+ properties for sale. This seems to be a large number of houses on the market than before. Is this just a normal spring selling season or is something else going on in Dover? Any ideas would be appreciated.

There are some lovely houses in Old Dover, but I would be cautious about buying there now. Violent crime has spread in downtown Dover. Crime used to be confined to a very small area of the downtown area, but now it is violent and covering a larger area. Combine that with the fact that the large new library just down the street has become an unofficial homeless shelter, and you can see the direction Old Dover is going. It's sad really because Dover used to be a lovely little town, and we used to feel safe walking just about everywhere. Not any more.

StillRoaming gives good advice. Within the past year I can recall several shootings and/or murders on N. Kirkwood and N. New Streets. It's probably due to close proximity to the westside. The closer you are to Lakeside Cemetay, the safer that end of town tends to be.

Do your research. Dover is still a reasonably nice place, but really rough areas are spread all over town.

Our little town of Wyoming borders Dover....We were #3 on the Safe Neighborhood List for Delaware in 2013. Nothing has happened here since, but I don't know how we're rated now . We have 1400+/- people here, and 4 police officers walking the beat, stopping to chat, in charge of our children's fishing derby at our town pond, and running radar. We are a hated town by visitors passing through. They just don't understand why they have to abide by the speed limits. ???
