My husband and I will be visiting Delaware soon and I am looking for suggestions for a place to stay...is there anything other than your basic chain hotels? The purpose of the trip is to look for a retirement home so it is not a vacation but I would still like to stay somewhere nice. Thanks

Google "Delaware Beach rentals" if your focus is Sussex county. You should find a number of condos, etc for rent by the week and even 1/2 week (Fri-Sun & Mon-Thur). A number of bed and breakfast are near the beaches also.

The central part of the state is only 1 hr from the beaches, but if you want to stay closer there are a few B&Bs there also. I don't have personal experience with either but for a touch of old, small town Delaware check the ones in Little Creek, DE and Odessa, DE.

Good morning.....

You can also try vrbo.com for condo rentals - much nicer than a sterile motel/hotel room. Just check off the town you are interested in and all listings will pop up. There will be photos and more importantly, there will be visitor comments. Have used this site for rentals in DE before and have been very pleased. Good luck.

Bed & Breakfasts are plentiful! Dover is in the central part of the state, and we have some lovely ones in this area. State Street in Dover comes to mine. Don't think I can name any on here, so Google would be best. The people owning Bed & Breakfasts here are very knowledgeable of the area, and are willing to spend time answering questions for you, about the area and retirement homes. One of the best retirement homes, IMO, is on State Street also, in Dover. Direct Message me if you want names of Bed & Breakfasts in this area.

nanfed51,

I can recommend a 2bed/2bath 650 sq ft condo in downtown Lewes. I stayed there in the Spring. NY2DE ( I recommended the place to him in Sept. for his retirement home search) he just reported back that he was very pleased with the accomodations - see the 55+ thread from earlier this week).

PM me or NY2DE and either of us can give you details.

The Bellmoor in Rehoboth is extremely nice, especially if you stay in one of the 4th floor suites. No kids allowed up on the 4th floor. The hotel furnishings are lovely.

The Hotel Rodney in Lewes has had a totel makeover and is a small boutique hotel. Completely walkable location on Lewes' old town main street, 2nd Street. Not luxurious in the way that the Bellmoor is, but very charming in its own right.

Default Motel

You could try the Canal Front, it is inside Rehoboth and at this time of year relatively inexpensive, they have a continental breakfast and allow dogs. Walks along the canal and close to everything. Its a bedroom and a bathroom. An old renovated motel. My wife and I have always enjoyed it. We would also recommend the Oceanus on 2nd Street 2 blocks from the beach. Depends on what you want or need for your trip. Lots of good suggestions here.
