Due to an illness and job loss, the people I was supposed to be traveling with to Rehoboth Beach in late Sept can't go, so I will be going on my own for the week. I'd rather not be stuck in a six bedroom cottage all week twiddling my thumbs, and so I need some suggestions on things to do while I'm down there. Help is appreciated.
Note: I'm not into the bar scene, and prefer to find some good outdoor touristy activities. For instance, one thing I thought about doing was taking the ferry over to Cape May for a day. I used to go there with my dad as a kid and remember it as a really special place.
Really, I'm just a little nervy about being there alone since I've heard of some crime happening down there this year-or maybe that's just typical summertime crime? Anyway, I've already been in touch with the police dept., who said they would "keep an eye on the cottage" while I was there, and the rental agency is contacting the retired year-rounders next door to let them know I'll be there (I know them as nice people from having rented the same cottage a few times prior). And, lastly, a work colleague said that for safety I should seek out a family or other traveling group who'd be willing to let me pal around with them while I was out, but I'm not that extroverted that I could just face-to-face ask that of people I don't know; and besides it just seems a bit of a weird/creepy thing to do.
Suggestions, anyone?

Not into thumb twiddling, huh? I think I may be able to help. I used to live in Lewes in my mid/late 20's as a single woman and certainly participated in the bar scene, but I also LOVE outdoor activities. My suggestions are as follows:

The ferry is a great idea, as is Cape May. We'll be headed over on the ferry the last weekend in Sept. to go see a monster truck show in Wildwood--love the ferry!

Cape Henlopen State Park is wonderful for hiking, biking, and fishing. Shopping around Lewes is also a good time. Of course, there is plenty of shopping in Rehoboth as well. You'll be fine during the day, no worries. It's nighttime that you should travel with somebody else--and, as a single woman, you'll need to do so. Yes, there were robberies, muggings, assaults, etc. in Rehoboth recently. Crime does die down after Labor Day since the thugs typically target tourists and older people, but no need to risk it.

Sept. 22-24 is the Dewey Beach Music Conference at the Rudder, if you like bands. We'll be going there on Friday. It's a great time!

Hope this helps....

Thanks BeachLiz. I had planned a biking/birding trip to Henlopen State park but the Music Conference is definintely something I'm interested in that I didn't know about. Thanks so much for the tips!

Birdwatching should be good around late Sept. at Cape Henlopen. The music conference is wonderful, and it's free . We go every year. You may want to arrive when it first begins so you won't have to fight for a parking space at the Rudder. We usually arrive when it starts and leave around 10--before it gets too crowded.

We'll see ya there, Liz! I'll be wearing my 'rdlr' button! We're taking the back way there (never get near Rt. 1) and going early, too. I'll never forget the Little Feat Concert at the Cork we went to a few years ago. We were on Rt. 1 for 2 hours, trying to get from Dover to Dewey Beach. That was our very first hint that our beaches were no longer 'ours'.

Oh, I don't blame you for taking the back way! I guess we're lucky to live south of Dewey, even though traffic near the bridge can be a nightmare at times--but, it will lessen after Labor Day.

I'll wear my "beachliz" button . I'll have to let you know what I'll be wearing before we go so you don't have to look for the button .

I won't be wearing a large straw hat and shades, and I won't be wearing a bathing suit with a hawaiian sarong. Look for a Woodstock type lady. More later.
