Coming from NY many of these were like second nature to me. The other good thing to do is to inventory all your rooms with a video camera or still camera. Taking pictures of everything within reason if using a still camera. The trooper mentioned this and said when people are upset, as they often are when interviewed after the burglary, many of them have actually can't recall enough detail of things to describe them.

I have never pawned anything but do know that if things are stolen, they end up in a pawn shop. A pawn shop will not take things that are etched with ID.
Just another way to maybe stop thieves. They are usually brainless but simple fixes may stop simple minds.

No, NEVER the SS number, not even the last 4, why chance it?

All you need is a unique symbol lets say a smiley face, or a number in a circle, or a square, or a word. If you stuff gets stolen, in addition to the serial number you can tell the cops that there was a "smiley face" etched on the item.

Um, no, unless your garage remote also opens your neighbor's garage!

(Admittedly, it does seem a bit rude to the people whose address you use.)

Alternatively, you could also use the address of your local police department or station.
Once in their home town, most people already know the route home without the GPS.

I would venture to guess the Police wouldn't mind.
