My wife and I are looking to relocate to the DE/NJ area for work. We'd really like to live in Wilmington or New Castle. I worry about the commute over the bridges. Google Maps tells me to expect a 35-45 minute commute if I hit the road around 6 AM. Is that accurate? I'm fine with that or as much as an hour. What I want to avoid are 1.5-2 hour commutes one or both ways. I could wind up working very long hours (16-18 hour days) and a commute that long would burn me out in no time. Thanks!

That's about right, 40-45 minutes from Wilmington/New Castle to Camden. I do that trip often and take SR 1 (Route 1). Don't worry about the bridges, worry about the summer beach traffic. It can be a real bear on Fridays, and sometimes late Thursdays. I don't travel from Camden to New Castle on Thursday or Friday. Friday mornings the toll fee goes up a dollar and stays that until Monday morning. The state isn't dumb!

For 5 yrs I commuted from Bear, DE to Cherry Hill, NJ which isn't far at all from Camden. I left my house at 5:30AM & arrived at work at exactly 6:30AM door to door. It was all hwy driving starting from Rt 1 into Rt 40 then onto the DE Memorial Bridge, then Rt 295N to Rt 130N to Rt 38E. Fortunately for me my job started me that early in the morning therefore I didn't encounter rush hour traffic, consequently I'd leave for home at 2:30pm & again avoided the rush hour. It's true to be aware your biggest headache is in the summer on Friday's coming home with all the traffic heading for DE beaches & also on Monday mornings going to work since many stay down the shore until the very last minute. If you choose to live in Wilm it probably won't be so bad cause you can avoid that headache altogether by crossing the Commodore Barry Bridge which is not on the shore route & is close to Wilm.

Hmmmm....I thought the original poster was speaking of Camden, Delaware, not Camden, New Jersey.
Sorry if I misunderstood.

OP has not come back to clarify which one either.

That's not a bad commute depending on your work hours. My sister was commuting to Philly from New Castle which is about the same distance. Go over the Commodore Barry, get on Rt 130 (which merges to 295) straight up to 676 or whatever your exit is. Probably about a 40 minute commute in good traffic.

Sorry for the confusion (and the slow reply). Camden, NJ not Camden, DE. Thank you for all the feedback! It's been very helpful.
