Hi all,

It was mentioned in another thread that to minimize the summer crowds I should look into towns that are between rt 1 and rt 113. Which I did, though I'd also like to hear the thoughts of the group as to the best areas between routes 1 and 113 to move to in their opinion.

One thing I noticed though is that the only hospital in the area is in Lewes (?) and as I have elderly parents who will be moving to Sussex as well I would want to be as close to a hospital as possible . If the nicer towns are much further away then I'd rather deal with the summer crowds on rt 1, than be a distance from a medical facility.

Also, how is the hospital in Lewes ? For what it's worth, I read a few reviews that didn't speak well of it. Is this accurate ? If so, where are the better hospitals in the area ?

Thanks, NE40

I think the hospital you are referring to is Beebe. Having experienced their services I can say it is a decent hospital, and they are expanding. There are several other hospitals in the 'area' but I have heard very mixed, and sometimes very poor reviews of them. Given that, I would go to Beebe if I needed emergency and basic services. If you need basic doctors, like dermatologists, it may take take several months to get an appointment. There are some on the board that say it is easy to get an appt, but I can tell you last summer I called around the Lewes/Rehoboth area and it was several weeks to months to get an appt as a new patient.

If you really need good medical care then your choices will either be DC or the western shore of MD, a good 2-3 hours away.

It really depends on what care you think you may need.

Of course there are many other factors to consider in moving to lower slower. I would suggest you being more specific in your requirements; retired, need a specialized job, budget, etc.

Suggest you go to U.S. News & World Report and check out their hospital rankings. As with all rankings, it will still be somewhat subjective, but at least you can understand their ranking criteria.

You will see that of 12 hospitals in Delaware, Beebe Hospital in Lewes is ranked 2nd (in a tie with Bayhealth Kent Hospital in Dover) behind Christiana Care Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE. Christiana is considered a "nationally ranked" hospital.

We moved to Lewes one year ago and live 5 minutes from the Beebe Hospital. Have only used them for lab tests and one trip to the emergency room with my 94 year old mother; very satisfied, but that is a small sample size. Having lived in rural, small town, and large city areas, Beebe strikes me as a good "small town" hospital (which is what Lewes is). Since we have been here, we have found a dentist, family physician, cardiologist, and urologist. Very happy with the quality so far. Overall, I've been surprised with the number of specialists here, but since the area is largely made up of Baby Boomers/retirees, I guess it makes sense that there are a lot of medical needs.

You have the option to travel to Philly or Baltimore/D.C. area in 2 hours where there are lots of nationally recognized doctors if you need a "big city" specialist. My wife had to have specialized back surgery and opted to go to Baltimore.

Hope that helps. Good luck with your research.

I guess I'm prejudice (we're natives of Delaware) but we love Kent General (Bayhealth) in Dover, which is affiliated with Penn Medicine. Rather than travel to another State, we go to Bayhealth. So many of the top rated physicians from big cities have moved here, and now work at Bayhealth. We have seen great improvements since their affiliation with Penn Medicine.

I've had great health care here in Sussex County and have always used Beebe all my life--no issues. I was seriously injured last year and was able to avoid surgery due to the advice and guidance from a highly regarded Lewes orthopedic doctor--cannot say enough good things about him and his team. He is from north Jersey, but he's been here for awhile. I also healed faster than expected due to a great physical therapist and his team.
I just saw a new dermatologist in Selbyville if anybody is still looking for one--Dr. Asbury and Dr. Moghaddam. It's about a month to get in. They both are highly recommended.

First off I would not get to hung up on" towns". The zip codes covering the name of a town cover huge diverse areas. In the beach area Bebee is the only hospital . In considering travel time you must factor in traffic. I live on Long Neck and can make it to Bebee in 20 minutes. On a summer weekend it would take much longer than that to get there from downtown Rehoboth Beach. Bebee is not a University Hospital. It is a good small town hospital.

Thanks for all the helpful insight everyone. Could you point out a few nice areas west of rt 1 not affected by the summer crowding, and still reasonably close to the hospital, shopping and all. I am recently retired and will most likely be moving to the area with my elderly parents.

I'd look in the Millville area.

Milford straddles the county line and is home to Bayhealth Milford Memorial. Bayhealth Milford Memorial Milford Delaware Southern Delaware

I grew up in Milford and was sad to see it kind of fall apart in the the 80's and 90's. It seems to be coming back though. I was down there for my HS reunion last fall and was happy to see a real turn around. Milford is a neat little town with a main street featuring the Mispillion River that runs right through it. The river also delineates the separation between Kent and Sussex County. There's a farmers market on Saturdays Farmers Market – 2016 | Downtown Milford. There's also a local brewery: Mispillion River Brewing - Craft Beer from Milford, DE. Strangely, the brewery is located out of town in a sort of industrial park area, just north of town. If you visit, there are even a couple of great bed and breakfasts right in town.
