Hi! My husband is AF and just got assigned to Dover AFB. We will be relocating from North Carolina (Pope) to the Dover area in August. We have not yet had a chance to come up to Delaware to look around ourselves, but every Google search I did brought me to this forum so I'm hoping for some input from you all!

I will be working full-time from home, and my husband will be on base. We'd like to be no more than 20 minutes from base by car, or if there is public transportation options we'd love to hear about it! We're looking to purchase a single family home (3bd/2+ba) with at least .5 acres, and need to keep it under $300,000. I'd like something nice with modern touches.

We don't have any kids yet, but we have 3 indoor cats (which is why we don't really have any good rental options - I won't lie on a rental application about number of pets). We both have cars but would love to know about public transportation (if any) in the area. We are looking for safety, proximity to things like grocery stores/restaurants, and we want to stay away from flood zones (so nothing too close to the beach, though with our budget I doubt that's an issue).

I am a city person while my husband prefers the country, but Dover's proximity to Philly and DC are good enough for me. We are in our 20s/early 30s, we tend to be homebodies but enjoy going out for dinner/drinks occasionally, we're big on outdoorsy things (parks, trails, running tracks, hiking, etc. Are there any good mini golf places around?? ) What I'm hoping for are recommendations on towns near base that aren't too run down, that are safe, affordable, and where I'd feel comfortable going for runs outside by myself. We currently live in a VERY small NC town so I'd like to be somewhere with food and grocery options but far enough from the city that it's feasible to find a property with .5+ acres. Any help/suggestions would be really appreciated!! I'm just trying to narrow my search because looking for homes for sale in the entire state of Delaware is exhausting!

I think you are going to have a lot of good options west and south west of the base. Just you go to Realtor.com and do a "Kent County, DE" search. That will show you the big picture for your search area. Delaware is made up of just three counties and Kent county is the middle one.

My only other suggestions is try to find a house with city water and city sewer. I would also stay west of route 13.

You are going need a car for Delaware.

Good luck!

That is so helpful!! Thank you! I'm wondering - is it really as feasible as it seems to day-trip to places like Philly, DC, NYC, Atlantic City? Or do you think traffic makes that less likely?

Sure! We live in mid Kent County, and have traveled to Atlantic City quite often.....about 2 1/2-3 hours. Philly is about 2 hours away, and D.C. is about the same. New York? The last time we went up there was many years ago. Can't remember how long it took, but it seemed like hours and hours. Somebody else on here can fill you in on New York.

You don't even have to go north to Philly for fun day trips. Lots to offer in northern Delaware which is about an hour away.

Lots to offer an hour south at the Delaware beaches.

Enjoy Delaware !

Many thanks to you and your husband for serving our country !

Thank you!! Google Maps says NYC is about 3.5 hours, but I know traffic makes that unreasonable. I guess we could get a train from Wilmington though possibly? I adore DC and I drive or fly up there once every few months from NC, so I'm really looking forward to being closer!

Thank you!! What else is there to do in DE besides beaches? I grew up in the NC mountains and currently live in the middle of the state, so I'm looking forward to being closer to shorelines, though tourist traffic and flood zones definitely make me anxious!

I drive to Nyc several times a year and it will be about a 4 hour trip by car. Traffic has gotten much worse there as it seems everyone has a car. Getting in and out of nyc is a hassle at the bridges or tunnels. Roads are not in good shape. There are buses you can take from philly or dc or baltimore like megabus or bolt. Real cheap and you'll have to plan it out. There are places to visit nearby though. You can drive to the cape may ferry in lewes and its a very nice ferry ride to cape may ny. Very quaint town especially around christmas with all the decorations. You can also go to assateague state park further south on rt 1 from dover, they have sea ponies there at the beach and in the water. You can get real close to them.

Yes, just my opinion, but I think a train from Wilmington would be the smart thing to do. Our 3 (necessary) road trips to NY were nightmares, and that George Washington Bridge traffic was something I never want to repeat. I thought they were friendly drivers waving at me.....until I looked more closely at their hand gestures. No worry, though. There's nothing in NY for me. Returning to Delaware, after those trips to NY, was like Heaven!

I am a native NY'er who also lived on Pope AFB back in the late 70's. It should take you between 3 - 3.5 hours to get to NY depending upon when you go. I live in Rehoboth and we do it in about 4 hours to Long Island. I can't comment on Dover as we don't live there but you will rejoice here. One of my worst memories of that period was the humidity and the pollen. Neither are as bad here.
