In a nutshell:

Meters up from $2 to $3/hour on the top 4 or 5 blocks of Rehoboth Ave.
Homeowner parking permits remain the same.
Meters remain at $2 an hour on the quieter half of Rehoboth Ave.
Fewer spots designated for the post office.

There are a lot of angry people over this, the meetings were hot and contested. In the end the mayor and trustees will hear it from the shop keepers if it does not work out as they hoped. One of the working theories is that a person looking to go to the beach will pay for it so the city will make more $$ and the shopkeepers will still be right where they were before.

I’m sure the streets will be just as congested. An extra few dollars a day isn’t going to discourage people from flocking to Rehoboth this summer.

Exactly. The shopkeepers position (many, I should say) is that this is really more about the city raking in dollars to pay for the over budgeted city hall project. They feel just as we both said that it will not deter a beachgoer.

The days of 30 minutes per quarter (AKA 50 cents an hour) when I was a kid in the '90s are long gone. Even the early 2000s before the smart meters were installed, it was only around $1/hour. Not a big deal for a family, but it certainly is more expensive than many big city garages. At least the earlier effective meters may encourage some more late night visitors. It does compensate that public access to the beach is still free compared to what other states have, and parking elsewhere to use the DART buses may actually see an increase in ridership due to this.

That idea was floated at a meeting too. Maybe a daily fee and a weekly fee. It would involve reducing the beach access lanes on the boardwalk to maybe every other lane or skip two lanes and channeling them to a kiosk to pay the fee. That was suggested but then the cost of manning the lanes was questioned. I am telling you got very heated at one meeting I was at.
