We are strongly considering a move to Milford, Delaware. We are retired. Any thoughts on Milford? shopping? entertainment? Safety?

Milford actually spans 2 Delaware counties. I only learned this last week when a friend said she lived in Kent county and I said I thought it was Sussex. It is also a city within certain boundaries. She said it is almost 10 miles in terms of square footage and there are two counties. There is a downtown historic district for shopping, but I guess it depends upon your definition of shopping. There is a community theater, a bowling ally, art galleries, nature center and walking trails, little boutiques. I guess the safety also depends upon where. My friend lives near the lake and it is very safe.

The Mispillion River runs through the city dividing the 2 counties and encompassing the Riverwalk.

Fairly safe town with a decent police department. There are a few places here and there where I wouldn't walk at night unless I had to, but show me a town where there are not any of those places.
Plenty of shopping in town with the outlets in Rehoboth 30 minutes away if you choose your days correctly. A lot of summer traffic that increases the amount of time. I think there is better shopping to be had in Milford/Rehoboth/dover than having to travel up to New Castle County.

Entertainment could be a bit better but there is a playhouse( currently undergoing renovations) and a lot of shows and music concerts at the two local raceway/casinos.
There are a lot of nice places to build or buy a home.

This just in:
Milford is going to get a 9-screen movie theater at the former Walmart. Should open at the end of this year. About time.

My husband and I are seriously looking at buying a house in Milford Ponds. We live in Maryland and are sick of the state taxes and crime of Baltimore city(where we don't go anymore, sadly). We have visited the area several times and enjoyed the walk along the river. Part of what we like is the small town feel of Milford but plan to make regular trips north to shop. Not crazy about outlet shopping. It has its merits for some items but not for lots of stores we are used to having access to in the Baltimore metro area. Glad to hear about the movie theater. We feel that this area will continue to grow and develop into a very nice part of DE to live in but realize that it will take time. Does anyone have any pointers for us?
