They are running in OC this weekend. Racing starts at 12:30 tomorrow. All of the big boys are there. Miss Geico and Reliable Transport will be battling for first place as usual. If you've never seen the Geico boat, it is powered by twin turbines and holds the offshore speed record at just over 180mph.

Many, many years ago my husband raced small hydroplanes. We traveled the local circuit, Md & Pa. I have seen one or two of the "big boys" race but that was then. All I remember is "Miss Budweiser"....so very long ago.

I dabbled in off-shore racing in the eighties and drove drove a top fuel drag boat in the early nineties. Boat racing and drag racing is my thing. The OC race was good. Only one boat turned over. Seas were 3-4 feet so boats were getting plenty of air.

Rossc, how was the turn out of spectators to the "other" race in the area? I must agree, the weather for the Delmarva peninsula was beautiful, except for that spell mid-afternoon Saturday.

That's pretty cool about your history with this sport! Perhaps another celebrity in our midst???? Great to hear you had a good time!

Turnout was pretty good. It doesn't have as much as a following as NASCAR, which is one reason I like it. It was a fun day on the boardwalk.

Glad to hear it, rossc! And you are so right, NASCAR has gotten huge over the last 10-15 years or so... not the same as it used to be a short generation ago! From what I recall, when dad was into watching the races when I was a teen, NASCAR was more on the scale of what I imagine the APBA is today.

I truly don't blame you for sticking with the smaller, less publicized sport! Much more my speed too... if I had my "druthers"! Although I AM glad we got to experience the race Sunday, we probably will support the cause on a smaller scale next time around.

Also, I'm really glad the weather was made to order for both events!

Mary
