If you Rota-Dent won't hold a charge for more than 72 hours it's on it's last leg. I pushed mine all the way down to 24 hours. (daily charging) The problem is, the Rota-Dent was never designed to be opened.

If you Google for 1.2v 1500mAh NiCd battery tabs sub-c you'll see a few for $5 that look like a match.
Mine was from eBay seller: radioshack.
Hopefully this helps overs save $100. It should last another several years.
