Update...

I went back to the dentist who put on my crown, for my next "cleaning" and to see his response to the crown.

He actually said "well, it looks like the gums didn't 'relax' around the crown..... but it is sealed well and should be fine". So I expressed my disappointment that he used didn't use a pure porcelain crown, since the sharp line of the crown was followed by black metal.... making the hole even more striking.... and that with time the gums will recede more and it will be worse.

He then surprised me, and said he could replace the crown with one that was longer to meet the gums, and use a porcelain crown this time. I had already decided that I did not want to return to his care, and didn't say anything after he said this. He didn't clearly say that he wouldn't charge me for this. He then said that I could think about it, he would document it in the chart and I could change it if/when I want.

Part of me doesn't want to go back to him..... it's like.... after you complain about your meal at a restaurant, do you REALLY think it's smart to eat the next meal they bring out for you? Maybe if you are at Le Cirque, but maybe not if your at your local steak house. Call me cynical....

Would you go back and have it fixed with the same dentist? Despite all of the problems thus far/in the past?

I seriously doubt he is planning on replacing your crown for free.

I wouldn't throw good money after bad.

And....even if he offered to do it for free.....I don't think I would want to put in the time and trouble for what could be another bad result, considering his track record.

I would get a new crown from the new dentist.

I had a friend who lost teeth because crowns weren't sealed properly.....I wouldn't take the chance.

Find a prosthodontist, they specialize in cosmetic work, and get a second opinion. I think you will get the best result using a specialist. Skip the guy you are unhappy with. Best of luck to you.

Thanks for your thoughts. That was my gut feeling too.

I really feel like going to a dentist is like going to a car repair place...

You can say that phrase to just about anything these days. Dentists, doctors, contractors, clergyman, etc.

Your dentist SHOULD replace that crown because u may be able 2 brush n clean the gap between the crown n the gum on the facial or front face of ur crown but u cannot reach to clean that place on the bak n sides of ur tooth n crown n if you’ll look in the mirror at that place between the crown n the gum, the way it is shaped, it is the perfect little crevice where plaque wil gather. That is why crowns r supposed 2 go up under the gum. So ur dentist needs 2 replace it n I totally get it, no 1 wants 2 go bak 2 a dentist that does crappy work! But crowns r so expensive n if u don’t get a new crown, the 1 that u hav now is not going 2 last as long as it should because u r going 2 get decay in that area n u could end up needing a root canal n a new crown in a few years And ur dentist should not charge u anything 2 replace it bcuz it was NOT made properly n don’t feel bad about making him do that bcuz he’s lucky u don’t sue him 4 malpractice! He never should hav permanently cemented
a crown like that in the 1st place, n you r the 1 that has 2 go thru all that again!

Off topic and just asking here... did that take a long time to write with the abbreviated and half words and number 2? It took me forever to read it. Is this how spelling / grammar is taught in schools now or is this just an outcome of texting and 40 character twitter lengths?

To the person who criticized my long message and grammar, Are you serious? Yes it was a long message and thats why I did abbreviate words! I was trying to help someone and explain to her how her crown should have been made and why she needs to get another one, why would you have a problem with that? Obviously you are a rude, angry person! Don’t u hav anything better to do than to make rude, ignorant comments to someone you don’t even know? I am NOT a kid in school THESE DAYS! I am 60 years old! I was also a paralegal for 17 years so I’m sure my grammar and spelling is a lot better than yours! You need to take some advice from Thumper, in the movie Bambi, “If you cant say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” This world already has too much anger and hatred in it, try making a change and being kind to people, that is something THESE KIDS THESE DAYS NEED TO BE TAUGHT!!!

The OP has had over 6 years to deal with this crown. If you want to jump onto a thread you've never participated in on a forum you've just joined, at least take a moment to check thread dates and activity before replying. BTW, your first post was hard to decipher.
