Hi. I got a quote on getting a crown, total cost of $1670. Is that reasonable? Thanks.

Does that include the root canal?

No root canal; it is for porcelain-ceramic crown + core buildup + gingivectomy/oplasty. Thanks.

I think the costs really vary depending on the dentist, and perhaps the location as well. I also don't know if the cost also depends on the type of tooth being replaced ( ie, a molar vs an incisor, etc). I had several crowns replaced last summer and I was charged around $1100 for each one. There was a lot of work done for each one- preparation, several X-rays, several visits and the dentist was meticulous and did an excellent job. These costs do not include a root canal if that is necessary prior to the crown.

My friend in Sarasota tells me she has to have two crowns replaced, and has been quoted a price of $3300 for that work, so I guess those prices are more in line with what you have been quoted.

Crowns are typically $900-1100
Buildups $250-300
Gingivectomy $200-300?

I don't think I've ever billed out for a gingivectomy during a crown procedure and yet I definitely do some tissue recontouring every now and then. How necessary is the gingivectomy in your case? Are you doing this through insurance? Maybe I should start billing out for gingivectomies...

I have no dental insurance.

Dentist office printed out estimate for crown that listed gingivectomy. That's all I know. I do go for periodontal maintenance every 3 or 4 months (despite DECADES of daily flossing)...some thing particular to my gums maybe?

Thanks to all for input.

Go to Dental Plans | Affordable Dental Insurance Alternatives | 30+ Top Plans and search for a plan that your dentist accepts.

These plans are not 'insurance', but generally cost about $150/yr and pay out, normally, better than insurance.

And, technically, they don't 'pay out'.. A dentist who accepts one of the plans charges the rate that the plan sets for procedures. So, there's no going back and forth about an insurance company deciding not to pay and then you getting billed and all. It's negotiated rates.

A good rule of thumb is about $1000 for a crown. Just the crown, no root canal, etc. Most insurance covers crowns at 50%, so you're paying about $500.

An example... One of the plans that I looked up..

Single Crown - Porcelain on Noble Metal $1,162 $612 $550 47%

That's $1162 normal cost, cost with the plan is $612. Almost a 50% savings, which is what you'd get with insurance.. But the plan only costs $140/yr whereas dental insurance sometimes costs about $140 a MONTH (Ok, slight exaggeration, but..)

I used one of them while I was self-employed and didn't have dental insurance.

It depends on the dentist and where you live. It is hard to say how much you should pay for a crown. The prices can vary quite a bit from state to state and from city to city. Just a rough idea, crowns could be anywhere between $700 and $1500 approximately.
