A thing I read toofache, is that vit C is a detoxifier and this is why my holistic doc has me taking it. It has a tendency to detox several substances out of your body and my understanding is that dental anesthesia produces free radicals which are then detoxed by the vit C. We do want that to happen but not yet--we want the painkilling effects to last as long as the dentist is working. My dentist felt that he had to work very quickly after giving the 6 shots, so that it wouldn't wear off too soon. It didn't, fortunately, but did very quickly after I got out of there and took another vit C pill. I just read on a website though that coffee or tea can do the same thing--cause the meds to not work properly or wear off too quickly. I've never had that problem though.

I also take adderall in the morning and have read that you shouldn't take vit C with that either and for the same reasons--the meds won't work. (That info comes from the pharma website) So, I take my C later in the day.

1000 mg. of vitamin C is a lot. In fact, it is 1,666 percent of the "daily amount" as established by the federal authority (I would assume in this case the Food and Drug Administration). I'm not claiming that 1000 mg. is a toxic amount (as I know it is not) but it may have some relevance to the fact that you had a problem in the dentist's office. People who take smaller daily amounts may not experience the same problem. I take 500 mg. daily because the 250 mg. pills are no longer as commonly available.

Have no proof to the contrary since I took the Vit C as advised; so whether the outcome would have been the same had I not taken the Vit C, I have no idea.

I will say that I healed quickly, had minimal bleeding, and was back at work the next day feeling great.
this.

A friend is having dental implants and was told to take 1,000 iu Vit C for a couple of weeks before the procedure. I read about it when she told me because I didn't know what the benefit would be. Seems it is commonly prescribed before surgery.

You're right but I have no idea what the amount would be that would cause this and I offered it up as a way to let folks know that if they take vit C they may want to wait till after the dental procedure. My holistic doc has me on megadoses of C for now and I am to take 10 Gms/day.

My dentist called me the day before to confirm my appointment and advised against taking Vitamin C as it interferes. I told her how interesting, someone in this forum mentioned that too.

I recently had an impacted wisdom removed and take 1000mg of vitamin C daily. Maybe this is the reason why i had to sit in the chair for nearly 2 hours while dentist struggled to stop the bleeding....(i had 3 numbing liquids put onto the tooth and 5 injections and still suffered the entire time with the pain as she drilled and pulled and split the tooth)
There was no time for the dentist to tell me what not to take or what to take before extraction as i had made the appointment for pain on the gum same day and when she looked she said its the wisdom and it must come out immediately if i want the pain to stop due to there being no room for it to come through.

I also take vitamin D supplement. Does anyone know the effect this would have on a tooth extraction as my poor dentist battled her ass off to remove the tooth even though she had managed to work it loose, the roots just wouldn't budge.

thanks,
