My mom had about 7-8 upper teeth pulled about 5 weeks ago. Has had a couple of visits to the dentist since.

They protrude quite a bit....much more than her original teeth. Doctor originally said to let the gums heal up some. He did "adjust" them somewhat so that they'd fit the gums better, and they do.

He says he doesn't think they protrude much, BUT THEY DO. And she is self conscious of it.

She goes back to the dentist sometime this week, and hopefully she'll be forceful enough with him that she isn't happy with the results.

Is it possible to have dentures that don't protrude more than the original teeth?

Were these dentures inserted the same day the teeth were extracted? Did she get a chance to try the dentures in wax before they were processed?

Once dentures are made, you can't change the tooth positions, color, shape, etc. The only solution is a new denture.

Denture flanges rest underneath the lip and can give a very full mouth appearance. Talk to your dentist and see what your options are.

Unfortunately, it is possible that your mother may never be happy with the dentures. Remember, dentures are are not teeth - they are a replacement for not having teeth. Human beings were not designed to keep big pieces of acrylic in their mouths.

I recommend that you consult with a good prosthodontist. Dentures can absolutely (and should) look exactly like natural teeth with no protrusions or facial alterations. It is more art than science and you need an artist to create the perfect look & fit.
