Is it safe to take codeine before a wisdom tooth extraction? (teeth, pain)

My dentist will be extracting my four wisdom teeth next month and told me to take painkillers an hour beforehand (though I don't think he meant opiate based painkillers but anyway) so they kick in after surgery.
I was thinking of taking 200mg of codeine along with 30mg of zolpidem tartate (Ambien) as it's shown to have analgesic effects. My doctor will be sedating me with IV midazolam so I worry that there may be a risk of respiratory depression though it seems unlikely given how weak these agents are.
Should I worry or go ahead and take them on the day?

You shouldn't be asking a bunch of strangers on the web, you should be confirming this with the doctor who will be sedating/anesthetizing and doing surgery on you!!! Does he even know you use these medications? He probably meant taking some non-opiate OTC like Tylenol or ibuprofen. Probably not aspirin as it can increase bleeding risk. Why do I suspect you are asking strangers because you are anticipating and won't like the answer your doctor might give you?

I wish I had taken something before my procedure. I ran as fast as I could and took 800mg of ibuprofen. I had to suffer for a while and I am not kidding, I was actually suicidal. I don't think codeine is necessary but that is just me. Unless you have experienced this kind of pain, you would not understand. YES, take something an hour before.

Well the codeine I am taking comes with ibuprofen. Each tablets of Nurofen Plus contains 12.8mg of codeine phosphate and 200mg of ibuprofen. That amounts to 15 tablets if it's to be 200mg of codeine. That would be 3,125
The codeine will work fine. Why take the ambien as well? I only take pain killers when I need them for as long as I need them. It's too easy to get addicted to the high. If I get high, I stop taking them.
If your taking 300mg of Codeine at one time, that’s too much. Normal dose is about 15- 60mg at a time. But you should really ask your dentist first. You wouldn’t want to exceed 360 mg in a day.
Well, combining random medications could kill you.
Even if that doesn't happen, if you take Ambien before surgery, you could fall asleep so hard that they can't rouse you to go home.
Have your wisdom teeth erupted, or are they still under the gum?
Bottom line, this isn't something you can guess about. ASK YOUR ORAL SURGEON which painkillers you are allowed to take beforehand. If he didn't suggest any, I agree that you need a new dentist.
