I'll be taking my 3-year-old son to a dentist. May I know what to expect ?

Why not ask your dentist? That's something you should know before you get to the office, and something you should go over with the dentist's office. Their website probably has a "first visit" page for kids too.

I bite the dentist when I was a kid aged 4 and my parents stopped taking me unless I WAS IN PAIN.

Yes you may, and you probably do, unless you've never been to a dentist.

A first visit to the dentist should just be a very non threatening experience, so the child becomes comfortable. Some dentists specialize more in children, so I’d seek one out. Maybe there is a children’s book that would help prepare a child for the experience. I have a 4 year old granddaughter who has been, and I think it went fine.

My how times have changed! For the better mostly!

The new procedure in our area dealing with children is:
The Kids get a tour of the facility. They get to hop up in the chair. They get to see all the instruments and given bare minimum discussion on the usage. They know these are "tools" for the dentist or the assistant.
They are told what an exray is and how they capture the childs teeth/bone. The first "visit" is a tour.

The First real appointment commences a few days later. Where they get to play patient and follow the simple instructions.

Ours has an overhead projector for the kids to look up , they get to pick what show or even display they want. My grand daughter loves to see exploding fireworks so they play soft music and let her watch the fireworks overhead. She loves going to the dentist for that reason. The one thing that she hasn't been introduced to is novacaine. That will be a difficult one as she is severely agitated with any needle or sharp instrument nearing her body. Her getting shots is a fiasco and a half.

She told me the other day that "spitting is so rude!!" in which I said, so what do you do when you gargle with mouthwash at the dentist? She says- I put it in the spitter toilet! LOL!!!
