Hello,

I'm currently living in COS but I just got a job in downtown Denver (around the 16th Street Mall area) and I'm trying to figure out where to move. I don't want to live in the city. I looked at a place in Centennial yesterday and I love the area already, however, I know it would be about a 40 minute commute at least (according to google maps anyway).

Can anyone give any advice on this topic?

Thanks!

Depends on where in Centennial, but I'd say, by car, a 25-40 minute commute should be expected. Expect to pay dearly for parking.

Another option is the Light Rail. A lot of downtown businesses offer a steeply discounted RTD pass (mine is $34/mo). You could drive, bike, or walk to the nearest light rail station and take a train in. It would be about a 35 minute ride on the light rail.

Parking wouldn't be an issue since I do get free parking with my new job, which is awesome, but I am unsure about the actual commute.

Several people have mentioned the light rail. I looked at the website and it all looks so confusing. Is it really that complicated?!

Centennial is a very long and narrow city. Which part of Centennial are you looking at? The part near Greenwood Village & Littleton or the part near Aurora? What are the nearest cross streets?

The place I'm looking at is about 2 miles North off Arapahoe.

I used to live near Dry Creek & 25. When I would go downtown it would take between 20 mins (off peak) and 45 minutes to an hour (peak of the morning rush). Disclaimer: I wasn't a regular commuter on this route but would make the drive every so often.

Unfortunately since Arapahoe runs the entire length of Centennial this still doesn't tell us where you are looking. What is the major cross-street along Arapahoe?

Everyone's right -- the time and ease of your commute depends on your location. I lived close to Orchard and Havana and commuted to 16th and Market (near LoDo). It took me probably 45 minutes during rush hour door to door. That includes the 7 minutes it took to get onto the highway and about the same getting from the highway to the parking garage.

Light rail is really easy. There's a stop just north of Arapahoe Road next to the highway and you can take it to either the 16th Street Mall at California Street or to the stop near Union Station. Both are served by the free 16th Street shuttle buses that run really frequently. While riding the light rail saved on the hassles of driving, it did take me an hour door to door.

My spouse does that commute on the light rail. Takes about 35 minutes door to door. Best part is that, because he works on the train, his day starts as soon as he boards. His employer pays for his pass, which allows us to live easily with one car and saves us thousands of dollars annually. In just a few years of car-lite living, we've saved enough to send one of our kids to a year of college. We'll never go back to the two-car exurban lifestyle!

What a coincidence! I viewed a home yesterday in Centennial also about 2 miles North of Arapahoe & Liverpool. I too will be commuting downtown and was wondering the same things...
