Took a long walk around dusk in the "West Wash Park" neighborhood... noticed 100's of ENORMOUS moth creatures fluttering around the trees lining Washington St, block after block. They definitely aren't the miller moths that we had a few months ago and get every year-- these are the size of small birds-- we're talking at least 6" long. At first I thought maybe there was a bat infestation? They were black/dark colored. One of them flew right into my neck and scared the **** out of me. Never seen anything like this before. And haven't seen any of these in other neighborhoods either. Does anyone know what this is?

Maybe the Black Witch moth? I thought you were exaggerating but this website says they can be 5 and a quarter inches across. This is a good website for identifying moths in CO.

Butterflies and Moths in Colorado

I've seen a lot of hawkmoths (that look like hummingbirds) in my garden on Lookout Mtn, this year. Also had an infestation of tiny black-and-white moths in my house early this year. Those seem to have disappeared since the weather got hot.

I suspect extreme weather cycles can play a part in such insect eruptions.
