Hi, all -

I'm planning a road trip from Central New Jersey to Alamosa, Colorado in August (visiting a friend before going to Denver) and plan to stop in Nashville, Memphis, Little Rock, Oklahoma City, and Amarillo on the way...anyone ever been to any of these places? Advice on places to visit? Other suggestions for travel/this route?!

We plan to camp out around Nashville as our one overnight. Any campsite recommendations?

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!!

Megan

Amarillo is a dry, dusty, boring, semi-worthless place.
The only attraction is the Pantex nuclear weapons plant and they don't give tours.
I have been there and plan never to re-visit.

Go straight from OKC to ABQ and suck up all the chile verde you can eat.
Little Anita's is recommended.

In Amarillo the Cadillac Ranch is pretty neat. If you like a good beer The Big Texan recently started brewing on site and its top quality beer, not sure about ther food though.

IIRC the Cadillac Ranch is aka Car Henge for the caddies buried nose first in the flat windswept prairie.

The Big Texan has been on TV many times for its 72-oz steak, which if you eat the whole thing, and its side dishes, within an hour then it's free. I had the 22-oz steak T-bone and found it excellent. In the evenings there's a roving group of country musicians. We also spent an hour at the stockyards watching livestock auctions, the sort of stuff you don't get to see back east.

About 15 miles south of Amarillo in Canyon, TX is an interesting museum, the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum, part of the West Texas State A&M University system.

If you've never been out west, you'll be a bit awed by the enormity of the wide open spaces.
