Family of five moving from Seattle to Colorado in a few months. Husband will be working near the Childrens Hospital in Aurora. We have never been to Colorado and I am trying to get a feel of the area and what areas I should concentrate on. Our budget to purchase a home is $240,000 (need at least a 3 bed, 2 bath, with fenced yard). We would like something with a reasonable commute to Aurora (preferably no more than a 30 minute drive). If anyone could give recommendations it would be greatly appreciated.

Our usual suggestion is to rent a year to learn the area, there's a lot to pick from in the Denver metro area.

Look around S.E. Aurora, along Smoky Hill Rd and C-470 (Toll Road). There are homes here in your price range, and along I-225 south of the hospital.

Realtor.com is good to see what's for sale; Padmapper.com is good to find rentals.

You can try looking at Green Valley Ranch. I found one that looks nice but there are many more for sale(MLS# 1110430).

But there are so many nice homes 30 min away. Do you have children? If so than schools is probably something to look into too. Try this site to find some good schools in the area.

GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community

I would recommend finding a rental for 6 months than look to buy. This way you get a better feel on the neighborhood you want to move into.

For rentals try this site.

Thank you. I will check out both of those sites. We do have 3 small children. One will be starting kindergarden next year. We are military so we will probably only be in the area for 5 years. So we are hoping that we do not have to rent for very long. We hope to visit before we actually move there so we can get a better sense of the area.

Yeah, and more expensive than she's looking for and more than an hour commute to Aurora.

Obviously Aurora should be the first choice. The next biggest and best place to live next to Aurora is Denver.
Denver is considered one of the prized cities that has many neighborhoods that are better than areas in the suburbs--just like Seattle.

If you live in parts of Aurora or Denver, you can be assured of a reasonable commute, which you desire. If you pick many other suburban cities, you can forget about it.

You also must know that the East rail line is now under construction to the Medical Campus. It should be completed in 2015. It will run west to east from Union Station in Downtown Denver. Another line, the I-225 Rail Line, has just been approved and it will run South to North from Southern Part of Aurora and it will complete in 2016 and meet the East Line. Now public transit is basic bus service. In the future, your commute would be much simpler.
