Hopefully everyone is aware an FCC license is required for this. There have been significant fines for those (often truckers) who venture on frequencies they're not permitted.

I've had a CB in my vehicle for the last 10 years. I drive all over the country and originally got the a cheap $30 CB to basically kill some time back when cell phones didn't have unlimited calling on them.

As the cell phone came around it's changed things a lot. For one, Channel 9 isn't really monitored for emergencies anymore since everyone has a cell phone. But, as long as you're relatively close to an interstate or major highway you can typically get someone on Channel 19.

I've continued to keep the CB in my vehicle for a number of reasons. Like one person said, when traffic on the interstate backs up for apparently no reason you'll get much more up to date information than the FM radio. You'll even find out what lane to move to in order to get by the wreck or situation. If you know the area you can make the decision of taking some back roads or just waiting it out depending on where the accident happened.
Another reason I kept it is because cell phone service can still be pretty spotty in desert areas like Utah. It's gotten a lot better over the years, but there's still times where you just don't have service... with a good CB you'll still be able to get in contact with someone who may not be able to come to help themselves, but will call the police for you when they get in an area with cell phone service.

One more reason I keep it in my car, I no longer have a cheap $30 one. The one I have now also has the NOAA weather radio on it and will turn on if there's an emergency announcement. So, if I'm driving through Kansas or somewhere else I'm not familiar with, have my Ipod playing through my radio and there's a tornado warning I'd like to know. I'm not listening to local stations, but my CB will turn to NOAA, scare the heck out of me with it's beep and tell me I better pay attention.

Great for speed traps, truckers still call them out most of the time. I've had more saves from the CB than the radar detector..
