Hi fellow Denverites

We are looking to add a second dog to our family. We've been thinking about this for a long time.

Any recommendations of a good shelter / rescue to go? We want to visit a few, but hopefully can go to those that have the largest selection to find the perfect match. If they allow a meet and greet with our current dog that would be ideal but not a deal breaker.

We are not looking for a particular breed, but want an adult female.

Any recommendations will be much appreciated!

Maxfund is the only no kill shelter in the area. So it is great if you check there first. But if you don't find the perfect match any shelter should be good and you will be saving a life at those. All shelters will insist that you do a meet and greet with your current dog so no worries there.

Good luck! What age, sex, size, breeds is your current dog?

Denver Dumb Friends League. And yes, you are encouraged to bring your current dog to see if they get along.

Awesome thanks!

Mic: I currently have a German Shepherd, he's a male 5 years old and is my best pal We actually did a ton of dogsports with him but he's retired now. We've been wanting a new dog but lived in an Apartment. Now that we own a home we have more bandwidth and space for a second dog. My current dog is status seeking, and doesn't do well with other status seeking males, but is a true casanova with females hence the female preference.

We just adopted a puppy two weeks ago from the Western Border Collie Rescue. She is just over two months old. We usually rescue two to three year olds but we decided on a youngster this time around. We rescued our 6 year Border Collie from them in 2010.

Definitely check out the Dumb Friends League and the Buddy Center in Castle Rock. I hope you find a dog that is compatible.

Good call on sticking with females. Some are dominant and some not so good to check with the shelter on the personality as well as the meet and greet. I could see him with Lois Lane (just from her picture, I don't know anything about her).

Or Gracie. I could see a male German Shepard falling for her.

Our older dog is a male and the puppy we adopted is a female. They get along great. It took the older one a day or so to adjust but he plays with her now.

I have a golden lab mix rescued from a shelter, as a puppy, in Ft. Collins and a purebred Golden, who was 6, adopted from a past client who wanted the RV life.

We walk around the open space in HR every morning. We see coyotes, those Colorado Geese, prairie dogs, and this morning two mallard ducks. The dogs thought "breakfast!" I thought hypothermia.

I'll add a vote for Dumb Friend's League. We ended up adopting elsewhere because we found a great fit, in desperate need of a new home, but we had great experience with the staff there, and liked how they ran their operation.
