Hi everyone,

I took on a 2 month house / pet sitting assignment in Evergreen near Evergreen Mountain. Long story short, the owner told me after I booked my plane ticket that the car she is letting me use to get around is a manual. I will need to learn and practice on it before taking even shorts trips because my cars have been automatics. I have access to a bike. My question is - are grocery stores, public transit, etc possible to get to on a bike? I have looked at maps and it is hard to tell if there are roads are safe for biking. The owner is out of the country for the week so I can't get a hold of her.

most all of Colorado is bicyclist friendly...
State Law requires 3' clearance for vehicles to pass you while on a public road

Still, be careful out there

I've found the motorists in Evergreen to be courteous towards cyclists. Many of the roads don't have shoulders but drivers will give you room.

Not sure where you're coming from but the terrain here can be challenging on a bike. Depending on where you'll be staying it may not be an easy spin to shopping. The car will be good to have.

Rather than risk ruining her manual transmission you might want to fess up that you don't know how to drive one and ask her to rent you an automatic for the length of your assignment. That will be alot cheaper than fixing her car after you learn on it.

Evergreen Mountain is near Alderfer/Three Sisters Open Space park. Depending on your exact location, you'll easily be at least 3 miles from the little, quaint part of Evergreen that has a few cafes, restaurants, and a handful of galleries/stores. Your grocery shopping at Safeway and King Soopers are further up Hwy 74 and would be quite a tough ride on a bike. It is the foothills and the roads are hilly and windy. Not easy to navigate on a bike at all unless you are a serious, competitive road biker.

Why not watch a few videos about how to drive a manual transmission? It's not THAT difficult to learn, especially when you can already drive (vs. a new driver who is learning how to drive AND learning how to drive a manual).

Evergreen's not the best place to be learning how to drive a manual transmission due to the copious amounts of hills. Hill starts are difficult and you'll likely burn the clutch the first couple times you try to start on a steep hill.

if your coming from the flat lands Evergreen is over 1 mile high, hope you have huge lings you'll need them(for biking).
Id rent a car w/automatic if I were you, but go to a rental agency far from the airport(much cheaper).
