All,

I am moving from Houston to Denver in Mid January and being winter and could be snowing, i'm not sure what to expect while on the road. I will be towing my car using a dolley pulled by my 12' rental truck. Would there be any hazards or long winding roads or challenging mountainous routes? I'm taking 287 N highway.

Appreciate it.

I drive 287-87-I25 from Texas to Denver several times a year. You need to keep any eye on the weather in the Texas panhandle since they are definitely more prone to snow than other areas in Texas. They had blizzards last week and 287 was closed between Childress and Clarendon the day before I came back to Colorado; however, the roads were totally clear on my trip back. 287 is a pretty well traveled road between Colorado and Texas, so they do a good job of keeping it maintained.

Are you taking 287 the whole way or taking US87 through Raton, NM and up I25?

I am from Houston and just moved back after living a few years in Denver. We always took the route bolded above. My husband took 287 all the way through once (and only once). I think the issue with that route is that it's only 2 lane highway for a good portion of the trip, but there are still a fair amount of trucks on it.

As indicated above, the biggest potential problems would be in the panhandle and then, going over the Raton pass in NM. You just need to be very aware of the road conditions before and during your drive. It comes with the territory at this time of year.
