What Will Become of Sportscastle? | 5280

Good write up on the history of an iconic building.

They should move Casa Bonita to it.

That's really not a bad idea. Casa Bonita in that ornate building in downtown would generate a lot of tourism. Casa Bonita would still not make enough money to pay the rent though. Should the City of Denver support Casa Bonita as a cultural institution?

No way on that. The Sports Castle deserves a better tenant then Casa Bonita and I expect that the owners think the same. The Gart brothers have owned the Sports Castle for over 40 years and I'm sure that whatever they end up doing with it will be a bit more high-end than Casa Bonita.

Though I'm betting that the Sports Castle will be getting a historic designation before too long.

I have driven by that building many times. And I owned units over looking that building. I did not find it memorable from the street or from overhead.

I do not own the property so I do not think it is any of my business what happens to it. I find it disturbing when third party obstructionists attempt to saddle a property with a historical designation against the wishes of the owner. And nauseating when said obstructionists try to make it sound like they are doing the owner a favor.

The owner, Gart Properties, is the one looking at historic designation and is working with Historic Denver on figuring out what kind of preservation designation is best employed for the Sports Castle. No worries.

The way I read it the writer of the article contacted the president of Gart Sports for a quote about his/her historical status designation article, the president, not wanting to appear close minded or wanting to offend anyone, replied that Gart was considering Historical designation status and that they were talking to people about it. If Gart was seriously interested in obtaining historical status they would have done it years ago.

Why? They had a steady tenant (40 years is pretty good) with low-risk of a turnover. Only now, with the prospect of major renovations to the structure, does it make sense to work with Historic Denver to get a historical designation and some sweet, sweet tax credits.

I would bet in the future renovation that only the Sports Castle itself stays, the garage and office building are toast.

I'm on board with Casa Bonita too. But makeover the food/ordering system as well.
