Chances are you won't find something under $1800 in Berkeley. (I live there). That being said, it is one of the most popular areas of the city. It is very walkable if you want restaurants, bars, natural grocers all along Tennyson street. So, if these are a necessity, it may be worth the price. I also get a nice view of the mountains from the city parks in the neighborhood. There are also some cool areas on Lowell/44th as well as up and down Federal if you want to see a different crowd than you'll see on Tennyson. This area of Denver (NW Denver) has many beautiful neighborhoods that possess what you seek in a community. Highland, Berkeley, Sloan Lake and Jefferson Park are all past the point of Gentrification. Sunnyside is getting there, but if you have a heart, you'll just leave those people alone. We don't need any more people being displaced in this city. Nw Denver is an awesome place, because it is extremely close to downtown, and also closer to the mountains than all other Denver Proper Neighborhoods. Apartments in the area are going to be limited to new developments in Berkeley on Tennyson, Dumps on Federal and the occasional large house divided into separate rooms. I might suggest Edgewater, Wheat Ridge, Olde Town Arvada. These are all just outside of the aforementioned Denver neighborhoods, but they are not within city limits, so they don't carry the Denver price. Golden is to the west of these suburbs, so you could live there and commute east to lakewood. Edgewater has a nice 'downtown' area, and is the closest of these burbs (excluding Golden) to what you are seeking. It also is directly across Sheridan BLVD from Sloan Lake Park, the only City of Denver Lake that allows motorized watercraft. The park is also a great place to walk around, play a game or catch a sparkling view of the Denver Skyline. Wheat Ridge is directly North of Edgewater and is more of a Suburban area, with no real downtown to speak of (they do have a small stretch of unique business along 38th avenue from Harlan St. to Wadsworth BLVD). Still nice, my Dad lives here. Directly North of Wheat ridge is Arvada. Arvada also has a nice Olde Town area, but the neighborhoods seem less urban. They are also getting the Gold Line to Downtown Denver, so that could be a plus for you.
Hope you enjoyed the rundown of the central NW neighborhoods and suburbs.
