Downtown Boulder is struggling a bit because of a lack of parking. Too many workers are willing to pay the metered rate to park there, and it's causing a parking shortage for shoppers. The City is trying to find the balance, and will most likely go to a system where the first hour is low cost, but it escalates quickly from there to as much as $20 an hour. Aspen has already gone to this pricing structure and it is fairly successful. Tough on the workers though.

Short answer: Yes.

It has been about a year since I've been to downtown Boulder, but parking is completely free on the weekends (garages, lots, street parking).

I think Cherry Creek should do something like that. Free parking on the weekend, but not during the week. This will help eliminate the workers parking there and then commuting downtown. I do wonder if they have a special lot for the mall employees.

I don't think that downtown Boulder and CCM is a valid comparison. CCM has parking structures and lots that they own and maintain control over, not at all the same as city streets.

Cherry Creek Shopping Center customers will have to buy themselves a parking spot after the mall announced it would do away with its first-hour free policy.

Starting Jan. 21, there will be a $2 fee for the first two hours of parking, $2 for each additional hour and a maximum of $16, Cherry Creek mall General Manager Jeramy Burkinshaw said.

I haven't been there since they instituted paid parking even with the free hour. Now even less incentive to go. It wasn't just the parking fee that stopped me, I haven't been to Park Meadows Mall in years either. I just don't shop that way any more.

I haven't been to that mall for years. It has become too snooty for me. Pay to park? No thanks.

This is a big win for Amazon. Brick and mortar stores are you listening?

At least with the free hour I could sprint in/out of the Apple store.
Not anymore.
F—k the mall.

I don't have a problem with it at all. It keeps the riff raft out. $2 isn't gong to break my bank.
