It used to be you could reserve your spot on a tour in advance online. You had to plan pretty far in advance, but you could do it. Tried to reserve something for my relatives' visit in May, and it looks like they switched to "first-come-first-serve":

Sounds like you need to come to the Mint as early as you can in the morning, and get your tickets (for the same day only).

This must have changed in the last year, as I remember booking this online for some guests last spring.

Has anyone done this? How early do you realistically have to be there? It says the ticket window open at 7am, and tickets go quickly. I work in downtown, so I could get the tickets, although 7 am is way too early. Wondering if anyone has experience with this new system.

Thank you, very helpful!

As an aside, I took this tour in 2011, and I have to agree with some reviewers - not worth the hassle.
We didn't know about advance reservations and just walked in and got on a tour - they had some open slots. It doesn't sound like this is possible anymore - they probably don't have any unclaimed tickets. I think we toured it on Friday, and now they are not even open Fridays.

The tour is nothing spectacular. It was worth spending an hour and a half, but I wouldn't wake up at 6 to get in line. I will think hard whether or not I need to sacrifice my time to get my relatives a ticket. There are other things to see in Denver, which, while not free, don't require this level of effort to get the tickets.

That's too bad that they changed into such an annoying process to get tickets. I remember enjoying the tour and finding it quite interesting, but having to be online before 7 am to get tickets seems a bit much.

Not online! You have to physically be there, at the Mint.

I toured the Philly Mint years ago. I was disappointed there were no free samples at the end of the tour...

Yes, I meant waiting on a line, not online as in a computer. Didn't mean to make it one word but as a native New Yorker, I'm used to waiting on line rather than in line.

I've always kind of wanted to take that tour, but after seeing the reviews and ticketing hassle, I'm betting there's a National Geographic special that covers it better.

My sister, husband and her two young kids just went on a tour of the Denver Mint last Tuesday. They got on line at 9am and secured tickets for the 9:30am tour. They were able to see pennies, dimes, quarters, and half dollars being made. She did mention that coins are not made everyday so they got lucky.

I drove past the Mint at 6:30am yesterday morning and there were already nearly dozen people in line waiting to get tickets.
