I hike with my dog all the time. The only time he's off leash is when I know I'm on a very lightly trafficked trail. Even then, he's very well trained. I call him back immediately if I see other hikers.

Sure, the dog needs to be trained and respond to commands. Right now we have two young dogs that are still learning, and there's no way I'd let them run around loose except in an official dog park.

I just object to blanket statements about dogs, or anything else for that matter. There are plenty of humans I've run across that IMO shouldn't be allowed to roam free out in public
