So despite the season and weather I have a backyard full of squirrels bouncing from tree to fence to each other - amusing for too many reasons to list here. (My life has been plagued with squirrels.)

I note these are gray-bodied squirrels with red points. Are these a distinct species, or a hybrid of the more common reds (familiar to me from New England) and grays (the cute infestation of California)?

Squirrels in Colorado

Quote:
. . .Tree squirrels include the fox squirrel, which is the species you are most likely to see in your backyard if you live in the Denver metro area. Fox squirrels are not native to Colorado. The other two species of tree squirrel found in Colorado, Abert’s and pine squirrels, live in the mountainous parts of the state. . .
If you look at the article, you'll see a picture of the fox squirrel, which is indeed grayish with red points.

The coolest squirrels around here are Abert's Squirrels. They're gray and white with huge, bushy ears. They're usually found around 8,000'. I've seen them on Bergen Peak and Mount Falcon.

Cool, thanks.

I am just amazed at how active they are in this weather. My back yard is a circus. But then... squirrels like me.

The little rodents really do flock to my area and do weird things, like the character in Hitchhikers who was followed around by the rain clouds. I'd tell some of the stories, but you'd really think I was nuts.

Fortunately, I found a very distinguished historical figure who was even battier about them... Freud wrote letters to colleagues noting her mania. Makes me feel better to write about her.

We live in a squirrel sanctuary! (J/K) The cats and the squirrels peacefully coexist.

All squirrels are evil rodents.
Death to them all.

We're surrounded by Ponderosa pines, their preferred habitat. We also have the beautiful black Abert's. Sometimes 3 or 4 at a time hanging out and chasing each other up and down the trees. They are quick and difficult to photograph. Very entertaining.
We also have pine squirrels which are less than half the size of the Abert's. So cute!

The squirrels in our area torment our dogs. It is funny to watch. They are actually quite smart and are known problem solvers.
