Huh. I am amused at how many in this thread think these meters are for the benefit of consumers.

(They were installed here, for certain values of "installed," last fall. The process, heralded by several rounds of notices, consisted of a swarm of monkeys running down the street, checking for open gates, and moving on if the gate was so much as latched. No door knocks, no effort to get to meters. I don't think they replaced one in ten. No sign that Xcel has come back through. Got a grumpy notice that I somehow hadn't cooperated and orders to report to voicemail jail to schedule my switch. I guess that's true; I was waiting for the worker to stop long enough that I could bring my dogs in and unlatch the gate... but then, I don't really want all this smartness hanging on my service box anyway, so...)
