I believe we need to finally visit our daughter for Christmas in Boulder, CO. How often do you think there would be airport delays in Denver International. I've been putting this off for five years now.

DIA rarely gets shut down due to snow. December is the 3rd snowiest month, and we only have a white Christmas about 40% of the time.

In winter, it’s just not the destination airport you need to be concerned about, but where your plane is coming from. Snow in Chicago or the east coast can screw things up as well.

If there are delays they will be more likely caused by staffing shortages, humongous security lines and bad weather elsewhere affecting incoming flights.

Why have you been putting off seeing your daughter in Boulder?

For what it’s worth, I fly to East Coast to see family for Christmas every year and have done so for the past 15+ years I’ve lived in Denver, except for 2020 because of COVID. I’ve never had an issue leaving Denver before Christmas, but have had canceled flights 2 times out of the last ~15 times to get back to Denver. Both were due to snowstorms on the East Coast and not in Denver. It can be a little bit of a crapshoot but I don’t think you should worry about it to the point where you decide not to visit your daughter because of a ‘what if’ scenario.

One thing to keep in mind here-bad storms can hit Denver around Christmas.

Do a search on this ---->>>>"Denver Blizzard of '82" It was one of the worst snowstorms in Denver history. The snow totals were anywhere from 2 feet to 3 feet in the metro area. The only people out on the road were C-Dot snow removal people and people with 4 wheel drives. The grocery and pharmacy stores were making a plea to the tv stations for the 4 wheelers to do a little volunteer work. The sad thing about this was a lot of seniors suffered heart attacks through the Christmas Eve/Day mess.

I was out at Stapleton Airport early on the 24th picking up my brother in laws parents who flew in from San Antonio. I also did a tad bit of volunteer work on Christmas Day for Walgreens at the Southglenn Mall in Littleton. It was an ungodly mess for several weeks afterwards because as the storm cleared up the Denver area didn't hit 32 degrees for a couple weeks. It caught the city maintenance folks by surprise and it was one of the reasons that Mayor McNichols lost the election in May. The side streets were a mess for weeks. And the potholes?? Yeow!

Another major snowstorm-turned blizzard was the Holiday Blizzard of 2006. At the time, we lived in Parker and some 5 feet of snow fell. Funny, but, at the time, I was employed in Denver, just north of Coors Field and people in Denver metro were wishing for a White Christmas. My supervisor at work told me, "guess the Denver folks will watch what the wish for next time".

The Holiday Blizzard of 2006 is in the Weather Channel Archives of Winter Blizzards.

Closed Denver airport for 3 days.

Another blizzard hit a few days later.
