We are considering moving from NJ to the Castle Rock, CO area. We have a 4 BR house (LR, DR, den, 2-car garage, etc). Does anyone have any idea on how much movers will cost?

Two years ago, we paid about $8000 to move a three-bedroom house from Maryland to Colorado, which included a month's storage.

We were relocated so I'm not sure the exact cost - and we were packed by the movers too which I would never pay for on my own - but I think the total was around $10,000.

my quote from CA to CO(shorter distance) from a 2bd townhouse was 5k$ with them packing, and that was heavily discounted because it was through a corporate channel. fuel costs make up a large portion of that and have dropped significantly since then(quote was made in may) so there is some obvious variance in your favor currently, but not sure how much

Default here's a rough estimate...

I just called PODS. They bring as many 16x8x8 containers that you need, to your driveway. You load them. They pick them up when you tell them to. They then deliver them from your home to the new town (8 days max)....either to your new driveway or you can have them (both or 1) stored at their local Co. facility for as many months as you need.

We would need 2 of them as one box is large enough for 3-4 rooms....we have a total of 5 rooms in our house (exc bathrooms).

For 2 containers moving from SE FL to (I made it up) Littleton, Co...the quote I rec'd was totalled at $6200. Now, if I wanted them to store one container at their facility in Co, that would be a monthly fee of $199 and if I needed 2 containers stored, it'd go up to $398.

Sounds good to me! I think we live around 1600 miles from Colorado. So, IMO, this is a very good quote. Only bad part is, is that YOU have to do the heavy loading work.....but the reward is that there are no shenanigans involved like some of these fly-by-night movers who hold your stuff randsom saying that you owe them more $ for this or that-after they already quoted you a price.

Also, we will probably rent a smaller apt when we move to CO...atleast until we find a home to buy or an area we like then purchase....so we will need some of our furniture stored....and PODS takes care of this easily.

HTH.

When are you moving? And to which area? Did/will you already have bought a home? Or will you rent?

A little off-topic, but if you own a lot of books, consider donating all but your very favorites to your local library. It's amazing how much books weigh, which adds to your moving costs.

We purged about half of our belongings when we moved to Colorado, and then got rid of another third when we moved out of our rental house into a permanent residence. I was shocked at the amount of unnecessary stuff we had accumulated during our twenties and thirties. I always believed we lived a relatively simple life. Hah!

Lightening the load gave our family a lot more options when it came to choosing housing for the next stage of our life together, and none of us misses the extra stuff.

former: But it's soooo hard to do!!! I'm kind of a pack rat. And books? I have enough to fill a library!! haha

ok, so I like the pods idea. But omg we have some heavy stuff and my back can't take it.

This is probably the hardest part of moving.

Oh, yes. It is hard, but the results are worth it. Once you get started, it becomes easier.

As far as the books, the libraries here in Colorado are wonderful. We go to the Koelbel library once a week, and our kids consider it an extension of our house! I don't buy books other than consumables (i.e., workbooks, coloring books) anymore, and we're gradually donating the rest of our collection.

But some I can't bear to part with!! I collect rare horror. Many of the books I have are no longer in print in the US and were shipped from around the world. But yeah, maybe some I could part with.

I do love the libraries here, but mainly the Denver Public. I could spend days there.
