When you say long stretches, what do you mean, 100, 200 miles or what? Have you taken that route in the winter? Appreciate any suggestions you might have other than don't drive it in winter, I've got to get out there by car regardless of weather. Thanks for the input.

I-70 would be better I agree, just be prepared to stay in a motel overnight in Grand Junction then venture out on the 70 only during the Day. I do not recommend driving on 70 at night, you could have black ice, confused wildlife, and besides you will miss the beautiful drive through the Rockies. Definitely check the weather while in GJ before proceeding. I would allow 5 hours from GJ to Denver.

Thank you so very much for the input. You are the first person to emphatically have an opinion and seem to speak from experience. Thanks for the timing advice as well. Looks like I'll be doing the I70 route now for sure. Had been leaning that way, but you just pushed me over the edge. Thank you.

Just an update on my drive from Denver to Susanville mid December. I started out on I-70 and then because the weather was good changed my mind at the last and went up through Salt Lake and took 80 the rest of the way. Now I am glad I did. If people thought 80 was less deserted and had more towns, stops, people etc. then I can not begin to imagine how deserted 70/50 would have been. 80 did have semis on it but they never caused any trouble whatsoever. Overall I am happy with my choice. Now if I was doing this in the summer when the sun was out longer I may choose to go back on the southern route of 50 but still not sure. I am just grateful the Lord answered my prayers and I had good weather the entire way. Thanks again for everyones suggestions.
