yeah...a lot going on downtown right now and no area is hotter than around Court Avenue. From the article:

Quote:
With the addition of Roers’ project, the Court Avenue area might be difficult to recognize in a few years:

* Last week, local developer Justin Mandelbaum proposed an $85 million, 32-story mixed-use project on Fifth Avenue between Walnut Street and Court Avenue. His plans call for apartments, a parking garage, a movie theater and other amenities like a jazz club and climbing gym.

* Knapp Properties and Hy-Vee plan to break ground this summer on a grocery story and apartment complex at 420 Court Ave.

* Minneapolis developer Sherman Associates is renovating the Hotel Randolph and two adjacent buildings at Fourth Street and Court Avenue into 55 apartments.

* Polk County is renovating the former JC Penny building at Fifth Avenue and Walnut Street into courts and offices for the county attorney.

* Local developer Richard Eychaner is renovating a cluster of historic buildings at Southwest Third Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway into space for several bars and restaurants
.

Thx for sharing that alter.

I've lived in Des Moines since the late 90's and I've never seen anything like what is going on right now downtown. You literally can't walk a block or two in any direction without running into a new building going up or an old one being rehabilitated. The downside is that both the sidewalk and skywalk systems are often interrupted or closed in sections due to the construction. This is far from ideal for out-of-town visitors, especially those that will be coming next spring for NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament but I believe the powers-that-be are doing everything possible to provide temporary signage, detour info. to make it easier to navigate.

Great times for Iowa's capital city!
