Is there anyone on this city-data board that has moved FROM CHICAGO TO DES MOINES?

If so - I'd love to know how your transition went and experiences!

Cheers!

Do you live in Chicago or one of the suburbs?

Our transition has been great. I lived in Iowa before I moved to Chicago for four years...and my partner lived in Chicago for 9 years...and is a Minneapolis native (we lived in Downtown Chicago). The thing we found is that we do a lot more (from sporting events to theatre to festivals) than what we did in Chicago. It's cheap...and it's not a hassle to get anywhere.

As for shopping and restaurants, Des Moines offers most of the stores we shopped at in Chicago (the only thing missing for us is Crate and Barrel and Whole Foods)...but there are alternatives here...or you can drive to Minneapolis for what we don't have (4 hours and a great weekend getaway). As for dining, everything is pretty well represented in Des Moines. Everything from Cheesecake Factory to local bistros are here.

The only major difference is the density of the city, but there are pockets of activity in the Downtown and East Village areas.

Overall, we've been really happy with the move. Housing and food prices are so much cheaper. You get a lot more bang for your buck here in almost all aspects (even going out is cheap...$1 draft beers...$5 martinis...etc.).
