We are buying a house in Clarkston and we're going to have well water. City water is available across the street, but it is just not in our budget right now. We need to buy new appliances and I would like a fridge with water and ice dispenser on the outside. I heard that this is not a good idea because of the hard water and that after the water softener it tastes bad (or that it would damage the mechanism). Any thoughts or suggestions on that?

Be sure that the refrig you buy has a water filter. We have a JennAire with a filter that we change every 6 months or so.

I will, thanks a lot.
Any ideas on how much it would cost to change to city water?

Softened water WILL NOT damage any mechanism. Howeverr, hard water will surely cause problems with the ice maker as calcium build up makes water flow more slowly until nothing comes out. Not sure who would be giving you that advice.

AS ALWAYS, never make water treatment selections without understanding your water conditions. What is the water hardness, iron, TDS and any other water quality problems?

Fridge filters are primarily made of carbon whci are designed for clarity, taste and odor. They do nothing for TDS, hardness, and iron.

I would never recommend hard water into a NEW FRIDGE.

we will buy a softener and that should be fine then? how do i get the iron contents or hardness level on it?
my husband also said we could buy an extra filtration system for the house, i don't know if that would help or not.
