The thing with Vice magazine is that they'll do anything to seem trendy. It's a try-hard, pretentious magazine written by people who started it when they were kids and are getting too old to still be acting like 20 year olds, so they're overcompensating.

They've recognised that a lot of art and journalism is centered around Detroit (And rightfully so). As usual, that journalism started in counterculture publications like Vice itself and has trickled in to the mainstream. They've deliberately gone against that to try and perpetuate their counterculture image. If they print an ironic piece that puts this art and journalism down, they'll seem like they're being alternative.

What's funny is that Vice produced the excellent Johnny Knoxville documentary about Detroit for Palladium Boots that was released a while back. So basically they're hypocrites.

Personally, I don't think that Detroit has given all that it has to give in terms of art and journalism. I think it is a great city and have a look at anything that anyone has to say about it. Plus journalists visiting there will pump extra money in to the local businesses. Keep it coming.

I think the magazine is admittedly fluff tongue-in-cheek humor with a tinge of documentary. I don't think it pretends otherwise, but that's just me. If that's the case then it's as valid as any other of its genre. Like I say, this was discussed in a previous thread.

This has the bones of a good article - fun, insightful, entertaining. But the writer's abrasive language and cringe-worthy metaphors really do give it a black eye.
