I am (probably) going to take the Amtrak train to Chicago. I can leave from Downtown or from Dearborn. I have never been to either station. Does anyone know whether it is reasonably safe to leave a car at either location and whether they have free parking?

Does anyone know how close the Amtrak station in Dearborn is to the Henry Ford (i.e. is it walkable). I could leave a car at the Henry Ford employee lot and walk if I needed to.

I don't recall the Dearborn station at all. The Detroit station area is pretty dead. So, I'd say leave it in Dearborn.

The Dearborn station is by the courthouse and police station. I never been there or the Detroit Station as I always board at Royal Oak. From my trips both stations seem to have a decent amount of passengers coming on and off the train.

according to wiki they say the dearborn station has free parking.

I used the Dearborn station recently when I made the same trip. Free parking in a somewhat more secure area. You pay for parking in the Detroit station and they had a lot of car break ins reported. I had no problems with Dearborn.

It is actually quite close to The Henry Ford, but might not be walkable, as the connecting roads would be fast roads without sidewalks like Michigan Ave. and Southfield Freeway (M-39).

You might ask either Amtrak Dearborn and/or The Henry Ford about cab and bus options.

Enjoy your trip!

UPDATE: I just looked up Dearborn station on Wikipedia - there is actually a Greenfield Village station, but you will have to assemble a group of 20 or more visitors to use it!
