I've read that there aren't major grocery stores in Detroit. Is this true? Where do people shop?

Residents shop at grocery stores in the city. Just like how the biggest and most populated city in the U.S. (New York City) don't have a Walmart (Major grocery store.)

The Urbanophile covered this question recently, and yes, there are grocery stores in Detroit: The Urbanophile » Blog Archive » Yes There Are Grocery Stores in Detroit by James Griffioen

Also, here's a recent C-D thread discussing the topic: //www.city-data.com/forum/detro...o-grocery.html

To answer your question directly: There are no major chain grocers in the city, but there are scores of local independent grocers and Spartan Stores, as well as Detroit's Eastern Market, which is huge produce and meat market where thousands of people shop weekly.

Find me a Wal-Mart or Kroger in New York City, please and thank you. It's not common for major chain stores to have supermarkets and large grocery stores in the city limits of most urban cities.

This is hooey, all of it. There are too chain markets in the city (and we'll include Highland Park). Three Aldis, at least three Save A Lots, a Super K Mart, and within walking distance of the city limits there's a bunch more chain stuff. There are no Wal*Marts in Manhattan, sure, but someday there probably will be, and if not in Manhattan, then in the outer boroughs. Cleveland has one and I think Chicago does too. NYC also has A&P-owned Pathmark and Waldbaum's.

Some people might travel out to the suburbs on the weekends or their days off.
