I used to drive from Southfield 10/Evergreen (Soutfield Town Center) to 23 and I-94 (Chesterfield) every day and it never took more than an hour. Getting off at 94/696 will cut that in half. Maybe once or twice a month it is terrible but not daily. You'll be fine.

I am not familiar with GP but I grew up in the area of Bloomfield Hills/Birmingham/West Bloomfield. Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills have excellent schools. I think all these area have a nice/safe standard of living. If I had a family I would move around this area though it depends on what will be your price range?

Daniella, thank you and great point. My price range is around 300K. It seems as though in the past Grosse Pointe would not have been an option, but today is a different story. I thought the area might also hold on to home values better given the neighborhood, but that is an assumption. You know what happens there

Plymouth or Northville. Two best cities in metro Detroit IMO.

If you're going there, you may as well get out of Wayne County and go to Milford....Especially with kids.

YES, the entire cities of PLYMOUTH and NORTHVILLE should relocate to MILFORD.

Plymouth is 20-25 minutes outside of downtown Detroit and 20-25 minutes outside of downtown Ann Arbor. It has a wonderful downtown and a wide range of people from economic backgrounds, from working class to some of the wealthiest people in metro Detroit.

I like it because it's less pretentious than Birmingham and more family oriented/less urban than Royal Oak.

I love Grosse Pointe but there is nothing to do there.

Northeville is almost like a sleepy little resort town, but it also has a nice downtown.

Anyway, neither place is hardly the sticks, which I think you are trying to imply. Many, many, many people who live in these towns commute downtown, including, at one time, my family.

I like Plymouth and would like to live there, but Milford isn't much farther and I'd like to be out of Wayne County. Even Howell or Brighton is a regular commute to downtown for a lot of people these days. Too far for me but it all depends on your priorities. It's not too bad a commute to Southfield.

Why do you want to be out of Wayne County? I lived in Wayne County most my life and never noticed it. Taxes?

To the OP can you take a trip to MI and spend some time looking at homes and different areas? Sometimes if you find a home you love it may help you with your final choice.
In terms of driving. I know many who go from suburbs and drive far to work. Everyone is different in terms of if it will take a toll. I remember for awhile I drove far and I will say it took a toll on me. That being said if I had kids I would want them to go to the best school district so that would top the driving issue. You just have to take into account that in the winter it will take much longer and summer is construction time.
Good luck
