The problem with Milford traffic commuting into Southfield is that I-96 is the one way in and one way out unless you want to take back roads. I-96 has a lot of problems in the wintertime.

I don't think I've ever been to Milford, but I've heard it's a good place. I agree with the Northville/Plymouth idea, although Plymouth is further away than Northville and those freeways out there (96, 696, and 275) run slow and have problems on occasion. As for the avoiding Wayne County comment, I've heard that before, and there are three reasons why I've been told to avoid it: 1. Wayne's taxes are often higher, but I'm not sure if it's the county rate or if it's due to municipalities not being as afraid to tax. 2. Having to go downtown to perform county business. 3. This one is a bit of a stetch, but should the region go to a more regional form of government a la Indianapolis, the balance of Wayne County is more likely to be lumped in with Detroit than anything in other counties. (This happened a few years ago in Memphis when they annexed Cordova, a middle-class area, and (don't know if this is true) it supposedly hurt property values.

Why do you want to be out of Wayne County? I lived in Wayne County most my life and never noticed it. Taxes?
Detroit. I'd want to be out of Wayne County because Detroit is in it. The politicians that administer the county are largely beholden to Detroit politicians and Detroit voters.

Until relatively recently, if you were charged with a felony in Wayne County, you would be tried by a jury selected exclusively from eligible Detroiters and a judge elected only by Detroit voters. This was changed 5 or 10 years ago and there was MUCH wailing by Detroiters. Detroit is a cesspool and I don't want to be in a county that is influenced to such a degree by the city of Detroit and it's residents (who voted for Kwame Kilpatrick not once, but twice).

Detroit's population is dwindling by the day. It's a dying city and that can't be good for the rest of the county and out county tax payers. Nice place to visit but there are better and affordable alternatives to most places in Wayne County if you're commuting to Southfield. If you're going to live in Wayne County, the northwestern part of the county is better.
