I welcome any and all opinions here, please.

After 15 years in California, I am moving my family back to Michigan. I have taken a position with a company in Southfield and am looking for opinions on where to live. My wife loves the older homes of Grosse Pointe, but I wondering about the AM commute to Southfield. More than anything, for our young daughter we want a good safe neighborhood and good schools.

Any recommendations? How is the commute from Grosse Pointe to Southfield?

Thanks in advance!

Grosse Pointe to Southfield isn't bad at all. Just hop on 94 East to 696 West to Southfield. On a light traffic day you can do it in 15-20 minutes. On a busier day - maybe 30-40 minutes.

You could also do 94W to 10N but that basically means you sit in all the traffic heading into downtown. Schools in GP are excellent. Check out www.grossepointenews.com for the GP newspaper.

I would relocate them to Royal Oak, Birmingham or somewhere along 13 or 14 mile road, west of Inkster.

JBG, No on Grosse Pointe? Too far away? Just curious as to why? Thanks much!

I like GP for its proximity to Detroit (cultural events/entertainment), it's proximity to the water - awesome private parks, the overall walkability of the villages and the neighborhood feel. It feels like a true small town as most people don't go through GP unless that's their destination. The Oakland suburbs are just as nice - they just have different feels. GP is like a resort town along the water. Think preppy WASP/Fairfield, CT style. B'ham/Royal Oak feel like any other upper scale suburb of a large city (e.g Naperville, Upper Arlington, Shaker Heights, Beverly Hills). Just as nice -just depends on what's most important to you.

Thanks belleislerunner! I lived in Western Michigan for many years, but never got familiar with the Detroit suburbs. Now i have to make some quick decisions.

I would move to Farmington Hills. GP is way across town from Southfield. OK, its not that bad of a drive, but it is across town.

Too far away for me, contributing to too much stress on the drive to and fro. Plus the lots are small compared to what you can get west of Inkster around 13 or 14 Mile Road. I like Franklin. Not much of an East Sider myself, mostly because I don't know the East Side well. After living most of my life within a few feet of neighbors on both sides and within 100 feet of neighbors front and back, I like to have a little more space. You can get that out that way, Franklin, Farmington Hills, etc..Plus, I hate driving through Detroit up and down the Lodge or 94. It's depressing. I don't mind once in a while but not for a daily commute.

I'm on the eastside of the suburbs and travel to the westside suburbs using 696. If your job don't start before 7AM, then your going to have about an hour commute.

In the evenings if you don't get out of work before 3pm, your looking at about hour and half to two hour commute. This is via the expressway. I have taken some of the mile roads north of 13 mile road across town in the evening (430pm-5pm) and its about the same commute time.

Traffic gets really backed up at 696/telegraph area.
