Haven't been home to Detroit since 1989. Is it safe now to visit the Art Institute and if so, where can one safely park?

Yes, it's safe. That area is much nicer now than it was in 1989. I (female) walked around that part of Woodward with my 17 yo daughter, admiring the architecture of the DIA and going from museum to museum, and no one bothered us. In fact, the only people we saw looked like young professionals who would hang out at Starbucks.

When we go, we park in the gated lot right behind the museum. I think it costs $5 to park there. Again, the only people we ever see look like college students or museum patrons. We always go during the day, but we have never felt remotely unsafe in the area around the DIA.

The area is definitely safe. I'm over there all the time. It is a very vibrant neighborhood. The DIA has an underground parking garage that you can use. I believe the entrance is on the south side of the building. You can also plug the meters on any of the side streets around the museum. While you're in the area, you should stop into the Park Shelton building. There's a really neat Detroit-themed novelty store, a new coffee shop called 14 East (I stopped in there today), a sushi bar named Wasabi, and also Good Girls Go to Paris, which is a fun little restaurant that serves French crepes. Quite delicious.

If you want more information on other stuff do in that area, feel free to ask.

Always parked behind the DIA but haven't been there in a while. Didn't it share a parking lot with what I now believe is the defunct Science Center?

Yeah it's safe. My favorite restaurant around there was Small Plates. Slow's BBQ in Corktown too. Of course those are not right on that block. I don't know what's in the immediate vicinity.
