America's Saddest Cities | Men's Health

Number 99 out of 100, with 100 being worst. There is some science - they calculated suicide rates (CDC) and unemployment rates (Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of June 2011). Then they tapped SimplyMap for the percentage of households that use antidepressants as well as the number of people who report feeling the blues all or most of the time.

100. St. Petersburg, FL F
99. Detroit, MI F
98. Memphis, TN F
97. Tampa, FL F
96. Louisville, KY F

Stupid article, sure.

Keep in mind they don't rate it by quality of life, but the number of suicides, unemployment, and the use of antidepressants. If it would be rated by quality of life, it would be laughable! Well, maybe still not for Detroit LOL

Six of the seven people living in Fargo are happy. It is a very happy town.

Omaha? Does numb count as happy?

Souix Falls Nwo those three people are happy! I met them.

St. Paul? Why are they happy? It is not that much different than Detroit.

Up until a few years ago, St Paul / Minneapolis had the FoMoCo plant and was doing great. My friends there say that Target and Macy's (aka Hudson's) are still a big part of the economy. In reality, they still have two cities with money flowing through them.

And we all know what happens Fargo, eh?

Fargo is happy because they have plenty of jobs (while you're hard-pressed to find a part-time McDonalds job paying $7.40 here, they pay $15/hr full time there at McDonalds), and they have a low cost of living to boot.

Granted this is because they're depending on socialism (see Bank of North Dakota), where as Michigan continues to go the opposite direction.

That said, the statistics used to spit out these numbers are very stringent, but even then I'm still sure Detroit would be near the top of the list by an overall measure.

Who wants to live in Fargo? Maybe hunters and snowmobilers. When I was laid off and looking to relocate, I got a call from a recruiter from Souix Falls. I thought about if for maybe 2 minutes, then said no way.

I was in Wichita Kansas for business a few weeks ago, and it is a boring, vanilla city. No hills, hours to the mountains, days to the coast....
Some companies there are paying an average of 100k to get talent to work for them.
If anyone is in the aviation industry, it is considered the aviation capital of the world. I had no idea until I got there!
