Hello, I have been offered an internship that will last 3-6 months working right off 75 in between melvindale and river rouge. I'm looking for opinions on areas that are generally safe, with apartments available, where I could commute from. Thanks in advance

What kind of area are you looking for? There are quite a few options. There are a number of cities you could live in that would be ~10 minute commute, including Melvindale, River Rouge, Dearborn, Lincoln Park, Allen Park, Wyandott, and downtown Detroit. Those will be your best locations.

If you want to be around entertainment and nightlife I'd suggest downtown Detroit. If you want to be in a vintage neighborhood that has some stuff you can walk to I'd suggest Wyandott. The rest are pretty much typical blue-collar suburban cities. Dearborn is nice if you can find an apartment near Fairlane Mall or off Dearborn Country Club. I don't know much about River Rouge (though my family is originally from there), but RR has pretty high pollution and the city is a little rough around the edges. All of these locatations are pretty safe and pretty affordable. Downtown has the potential of being expensive if you want an apartment on the 30th floor, otherwise most places are reasonable- around $650-850/mo.

I'd say Allen Park or Southgate, the next city due south. Wyandotte if you want something with a real downtown with places you can go. Taylor (immediately west of AP/S'gate) is also a possibility, but some of the apartments there aren't so nice, so choose more carefully there. River Rouge is genuinely run down as is neighboring Ecorse. Lincoln Park falls between those two and AP/S'gate in quality.

Wyandotte is your best bet, but it's a little far away. West Dearborn would be another good area. Generally more suburban though. You should stay out of Ecorse/River Rouge/Melvindale and southwest Taylor. Seeing as it's temporary, Garden City might be a good choice, but stay as far from the Inkster border as possible.

Another vote for Wyandotte. It is not much of a drive from there to Marathon and Wyandotte has some life to it. Try to get a place in walking distance to downtown Wyandotte and, if possible, on the water.

Another very good alternative is downtown Detroit. There are some really neat places to live downtown and it is reasonably safe if you stay in the right areas. There are seeveral other threads about living downtown, look them up. I would probably live downtown if I did nto have kids.
