We are considering relocating to the Detroit area.

I have a son with a summer birthday who was not sent to school until he was 6. This is the norm in the area I currently live but understand it can also be regional. What is the norm for people in this area? Do families typically wait or would he be in the minority?

I think we are looking in the Grosse Pointe areas.

Typically, start age is 5. Some people do wait until 6, but I honestly haven't met any parents in that situation.

In this area, a lot of kids do pre-K/preschool before going to K.

It really depends on the situation.

I believe it is turning 5 before December 20 or 31? Otherwise it is the following year. You can check with the district website where you will be enrolled in for details.

Here in Brighton it is 5 years old by September 1, 2015 to enroll in Kindergarten.

They changed the law so that it is 5 by Sept. 1 for all districts.

It depends more on the kid than on any objective criteria. Some kids will get bored because they are so far ahead. Some will be better off. Frequently older kids benefit in sports because they ar ebigger and more coordinated than their younger peers. Several of our kids started at age 6 (we lived in California when they started). They were fine in school. Got their licenses first!.

Just trying to get an idea of the culture. I know in my area of the country the culture is to not send summer babies even though they can technically start K.

People vary on this. I know many parents who have waited because they felt that their child just wasn't ready. We had two summer babies, and both started kdg at age five. The oldest would complain about being "youngest and smallest in class." The other was very, very eager to go to kindergarten and certainly seemed ready. He has never complained about his age.

Yeah - it's really an individual choice. Especially with so many people homeschooling these days.

There really isn't a set way of doing it here. People do what's right for their family.

We have a fall baby and held him back. I think this is becoming much more the norm. Safe to say your child will not be an "outcast."
