I'm pretty sure there is a large degree of truth in there, the decline of the car industry caused the cities where their plants were located to decline as well. Not just in Pontiac but in Detroit and Flint too.

There is no decline in the car industry, only automation, and outsourcing of labor-intensive jobs. American cities mostly have a problem with racism and segregation, suburban sprawl etc. It was never about jobs or the economy.

Pay little mind, drro is our resident troll. He knows everything about Metro Detroit, despite having never visited and living in Europe. He's relatively convinced Michigan is a sprawling wasteland of Mad Maxesque decay where people get murdered for funzies. Arguing with him is not terribly productive, because when you make points which can't be refuted he'll lay low for 2 months and then, one day, BAM! Drro is back to remind us that Pontiac sucks and Detroit = Raccoon City - we've got to get this guy to come out for a Wings game, a DIA visit, and dinner at Slows. Then we can show him some of the upscale parts of the metro and really blow his mind

Just saw a report showing that Inkster had 16 murders last year! That gives it a higher murder rate than Detroit, Flint, Baltimore, St. Louis, and pretty much every other city in the U.S.

All kidding aside Inkster has always had a bad reputation. My dad grew up in Garden City and it was even considered a "no go" when he was growing up in the 50's, 60's and early 70's.
The problem for Inkster is that places like Garden City are in the dumpster now... there was a time when it was a decent place surrounded by other decent places, then it became a downtrodden place surrounded by decent places. But is there really much hope for a downtrodden place surrounded by other downtrodden places?

Interestingly Garden City School District operates the Burger Baylor School for Students with Autism in Inkster; it was formerly Baylor-Woodson Elementary School of Inkster School District. Notice Garden City district doesn't actually have any territory in Inkster, but they have their district special school in Inkster anyway.

That's not what I've heard, there's been a huge crisis in the US car industry with two out of three large US car manufacturers needing a bailout to survive: effects of the 2008 - 2010 automotive industry crisis on the US.

Yup, the auto industry is essentially dead. Some guy on City-Data told me so.

Marketwatch: U.S. auto sales reached record in 2016, auto makers say
CNN: Car sales set another U.S. record - Jan. 4, 2017
Wall Street Journal: U.S. Auto Sales Set Annual Record

Oh shoot. I guess no one told you - this is 2017. Time to update your calendar (and your worldview). Better let your friends know about the last fifteen years as well. It can be pretty awful to suddenly realize 10 years have passed and you did not notice.

Automakers are doing quite well now. They are back to selling the high margin big vehicles like mad. Sedans are not selling well, but the mfgs are not hurt by it. They make a lot more on SUVs which are immensely popular once again.

Fiat is a bit strapped for cash. If there is a downturn, they are really in trouble. The others are anticipating a future downturn and this time, when it comes, they will not get caught unaware and will be prepared to deal with it and come out in good shape.

For a town of 20,000 people. I think Inkster is more or less the size of a average Detroit neighborhood by population but worse than the average Detroit neighborhood.

Drro, make up man. That was almost 10 years ago.
